Grayton Beach

Every beach road needs one town that never got the memo about behaving, and on 30A that is Grayton. It started in 1885 around Army Major Charles T. Gray's homestead, on ground the farmers had passed over as too sandy, which turned out to be the best bad farmland in Florida. What grew instead was a loose settlement of artists, anglers, and porch philosophers, and the DNA held.

The town backs onto Grayton Beach State Park, more than two thousand acres of dunes, forest, and a beach that turns up on national top-ten lists, with a campground and cabins if a rental house is not your style. Western Lake, the most photographed of the coastal dune lakes, pools behind the dunes here, and paddling it at first light is the single best free hour on 30A.

The scene, honestly

Hotz Avenue is the cultural center: The Red Bar, which burned in 2019 and came back as the town's live-music landmark, plus AJ's for the looser nights. Mornings belong to Black Bear Bread Co. and Hibiscus Coffee, lunch to Chanticleer Eatery or Chiringo, and oysters to Hurricane Oyster Bar. Grayton Seafood Co. and Borago hold down proper dinners. None of it is fancy; all of it is good.

The art is not a gift-shop afterthought here. The Zoo Gallery, The Shard Shop, La Duna, Saczynski, and The Studio Gallery all work within a few blocks, and the GRAYT WALL turns a fence line into a rotating public canvas. Offshore, the Underwater Museum of Art, the first underwater sculpture museum in North America, sits in the Gulf off this very beach.

Two practical notes locals will give you anyway: the weekly beach volleyball runs Mondays and Wednesdays, and 30A Blaze handles legal beach bonfires when you want one done right; the permits behind those fires come from the South Walton Fire District.

And the detail that makes Grayton genuinely unlike anywhere else on the road: this is one of only two beaches in Walton County, with Inlet Beach, where vehicles are allowed on the sand. It is strictly a locals' privilege, not a visitor amenity: full-time Walton County residents, property owners, or registered voters enter the county's annual permit lottery, and winners buy a $135 one-year, non-renewable permit through Walton County Code Compliance under the county's beach activities ordinance (application windows are posted on the county's beach permits page). For everyone else the rule is simple, no driving on the beach; but it explains the trucks parked at the waterline here, a Grayton signature going back generations.

Who should pick it

Stay in Grayton if you want your beach town with texture: dogs in truck beds, paddleboards on roof racks, galleries between bars. If you want manicured lawns and matched architecture, Seaside and Rosemary will treat you better; Grayton would only tease you about it.
