The coastal dune lakes, 30A's rarest asset
Coastal dune lakes are freshwater lakes pooled right behind the beach dunes that occasionally break through to the Gulf, a landform found in only a few places on Earth. Six named lakes string along 30A: Oyster and Stallworth at Dune Allen, Draper at Blue Mountain, Western at Grayton, Eastern at Seagrove, and Camp Creek near Inlet Beach. Paddling one at first light is the single most 30A thing you can do.
Every coastline has dunes; almost none have lakes living directly behind them. The dune lakes are the reason the drive keeps flashing water on both sides of the road, and the reason biologists get reverent about this county. Rain and groundwater fill them; storms and high water periodically open an outfall, a temporary channel where lake pours into Gulf and Gulf pushes back. The result is a brackish, shifting ecosystem that hosts everything from herons to the occasional confused redfish.
The paddling order
Western Lake is the classic: inside Grayton Beach State Park, framed by the dunes that make the postcard, rentals available in season. Eastern Lake gives Seagrove its quiet third act, Draper floats the west side of Blue Mountain under live oaks, and Oyster and Stallworth make Dune Allen feel like lake country that happens to own a beach. Camp Creek Lake, toward Inlet Beach, marks where the corridor turns wild.
How to be good to them
Launch gently, skip the wake, and never treat an outfall as a water slide; the channels are the lakes' lungs. The Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance leads local stewardship of the lakes, and their work is the reason this landscape still looks like itself. Paddle it, photograph it, and leave it exactly as found.
Quick questions
What is a coastal dune lake?

Can you swim or paddle in the dune lakes?
Paddling is the classic use: Western Lake in Grayton Beach State Park is the signature run, with rentals in season. Treat the lakes gently; they are the region's ecological crown jewels.
Which 30A towns have dune lakes?
Dune Allen has Oyster and Stallworth, Blue Mountain has Draper, Grayton has Western Lake, Seagrove has Eastern Lake, and the WaterSound-to-Inlet stretch runs past Camp Creek Lake.
