Inlet Beach

Inlet Beach is the first 30A town you touch coming from the east, and for years it was the one people drove past. That changed. It now holds one of the strongest practical hands on the road: the area's largest regional beach access, complete with a long boardwalk, seasonal lifeguards, restrooms, and accessible parking, which on a peak Saturday is worth more than any design pedigree.

The water has its own argument: a snorkeling reef sits roughly 250 to 300 feet offshore, close enough to swim from the sand, which makes Inlet the easiest do-it-yourself snorkel on 30A. Phillips Inlet marks the town's east side, where the beach turns wild fast.

The lake nobody tells first-timers about

Inlet Beach's eastern boundary hides the corridor's biggest natural feature: Lake Powell, the largest coastal dune lake in Florida at roughly 800 acres, a freshwater-to-brackish basin that trades water with the Gulf through Phillips Inlet. On its shore sits Camp Helen State Park, a 180-acre day-use park on the town's eastern border with trails, beach, and fishing in both fresh and salt water. Coastal dune lakes exist in only a handful of places on Earth, and this is the biggest one Florida has; having it as your town's back fence is a genuinely rare amenity, and most visitors drive past without knowing it is there.

One more only-here detail: Inlet Beach is one of just two places in Walton County, with Grayton, where permitted vehicles are allowed on the sand. The permit is resident-gated through a county lottery, so for visitors it simply explains the occasional truck by the waterline rather than offering an activity.

Food and the everyday

The breakfast bench is deep for a town this size: Big Bad Breakfast does the full southern morning, and The Donut Hole is the 30A institution whose line moves faster than it looks. Dinner runs from Amici's Italian to Cuvee 30A at the polished end, with Shades Bar and Grill holding the casual middle since long before the town was cool.

The shops skew local and useful: 30A Olive Oil Co., the Blue Giraffe gallery, Willow and Mercer, MYST Yoga, and paddle rentals from 30A Beach Paddle Surf. Rosemary Beach's town center sits one town west when you want the cobblestones, which is exactly the Inlet play: sleep where it is calm and cheap, walk to where it is not.

Who should pick it

Families who want lifeguarded sand and easy parking, snorkelers, and anyone doing the east end on a budget. If you need to wake up inside a town center, book Rosemary and come here for breakfast instead.
